Cutting Edge Nano-Materials

cen mat logo
Cutting Edge Nano-Materials (CEN-Mat) is a spin-off from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) delivering highly specialized and custom tailored Nano-Materials (NMs).

Although NMs are pretty small and invisible to the human eye many NMs are engineered and placed in our everyday products to enhance their properties. NMs can be found in cosmetics such as face and body lotions, in food and its packaging, in everyday technologies such as smartphones and cars or in medical products such as in contrast agents for the magnetic resonance imaging. The importance of such nano-enabled products to the global economy can be realized when looking at the global revenue growth in the last years from $731 billion in 2012 to $4.4 trillion until today (2018). Yet, using NMs in order to benefit a product through their inherent functionality one needs to functionalize these with respect to the desired properties of the final product and integrate these efficiently and smart into the technology.

This is where the problem starts: NMs currently available on the market are not customized to the customer's needs, thus leaving potential users of NMs representing various industry branches unserved. Additionally the customer is often left alone with the raw NM without being offered a solution for the integration of these into their technology.

To bridge this gap in the value chain CEN-Mat is pursuing a different approach overcoming the massive disadvantages of standard products and services. CEN-Mats approach is based on an adaptive and up-scalable synthesis route delivering custom tailored and highly specialized NM serving the needs of each and every customer individually plus offering solutions on the NMs integration.

These services are especially needed for innovative products and for upcoming technologies developed by R&D focused companies. These companies are unable to approach global players for their material requirement due to the limited volume orders as well as the very specialized material specifications. Thus these companies as well as research institutes and universities will be the primary customers of CEN-Mat taking full advantage of the extensive experience in NM synthesis, the fairly flexible production volumes as well as the consultation around NMs.

Siddarmark LLC

siddarmark logo

Siddarmark, LLC was established in 2016 to commercialize nano carbon technology along with the regional development program on nano carbon in a prefecture in Japan.

Our Sugikuro® is made of vertically-aligned double-walled CNT array without metal residue. Since the yarn consists of pure homogeneous CNTs, various applications are realized. Also as the yarn can be woven into commercial polymer yarns as ribbon tape. Thus for the first time globally, we offer high-speed motion and tactile sensors that are applied to VR interface between human and machine, robot motion sensing, and heartbeat sensors like Band-Aid. Also, The electrical copper-plated yarn is developed, which exhibits 50% and less density than metal wire, thereby making it the lighter than the copper wire that us used for harness and mesh-shield cables.

CNT resin composite, meanwhile, which we have also developed, can achieve homogeneous distribution of CNTs in resin matrix. And, our CNT aqueous ink can be used for flat surface heaters. One type of the heaters is transparent, applicable for traffic signal covers to protect traffic lights from snow and ice storms—all powered by batteries. Carbon Fiber Glued Press® or CFGP® is developed using the CNT knowledge. CFGP can be manufactured by machine press with thermoplastic resin glue to reduce the processing time and cost dramatically. Since CFGP has not brittle at all, it can be used for police or military armor and auto bodies.

axonenviro logo
AXON ENVIRO-GROUP Ltd., established in 1997, is an independent consulting firm with extensive experience in the area of environment ranging from atmospheric pollution management, modelling and monitoring to industrial safety and climate change. One of the projects of the company currently in progress is NanoMONITOR LIFE14. NanoMONITOR focuses on the potential environmental impacts of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), a new type of emergent contaminants, whose production and use is growing continuously due to the increasing number of applications by the industry. These materials, designed and produced to have structural features with at least one dimension of 100 nanometers or less, presents a dilemma to regulators regarding hazard and exposure characterization due to the limited knowledge on their toxicological properties and concentration in relevant compartments, including indoor workplaces, urban areas, freshwater ecosystems or soils, among others. Under this context, considering the LIFE priority areas and the priorities for environment and health set out in the 7th Environment Action Programme, the main purpose of the project is to generate reliable and robust data on the concentration of engineered nanomaterials in relevant compartments to support the risk assessment of nanomaterials from a regulatory point of view, specially REACH, where the use of exposure data may necessary to reach an adequate risk control.

EC4SafeNano "European Centre for Risk Management and Safe Innovation in Nanomaterials & Nanotechnologies"

ec4safenano logo
A central challenge to ensure the sustainable production and use of nanotechnologies is to understand the risks for environment, health and safety associated with this technology and resulting materials and products, and to identify and implement practical strategies to minimize these risks. Knowledge on these risks is growing rapidly, but effective use of this knowledge for risk management by market actors is lagging behind.
The EC4SafeNano initiative (www.EC4SafeNano.eu) is an ongoing effort to develop a distributed Centre of European organisations offering services for Risk Management and Safe Innovation for Nanomaterials & Nanotechnologies. Thus, EC4SafeNano aims to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge on hazard and risk, and ‘fit-for-purpose’ tools and strategies.

The Centre will be structured as a hub-based network of organizations managed by a core group of public-oriented bodies providing risk management and safe innovation support to all stakeholders. It will be operated with the support of Associated Partners so as to expand its capabilities, resources and services. It will interact with existing platforms and centres of excellence in nanosafety and foster the organization or development of national hubs mirroring the European hub. The Centre will seek financial support from stakeholders and service users to sustain the services in the longer term.

The project will inventory the needs of the various stakeholders (private and public) and the available resources and capabilities, and develop harmonized services meeting these needs. It will define and implement processes to deliver, test, benchmark and update services and to evaluate the governance of the Centre. A business plan will be developed to ensure self-sufficiency of the Centre beyond the project lifetime.
Interested persons or organisations are invited to join this initiative as registered stakeholders or Associated Partners, to engage in focus networks and to help shape the future Centre.
