Given global population growth, there's an increasing need to enhance booth food and energy production. However, meeting increased food demand leads to increased fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. The European Commission is implementing several actions to mitigate this. For instance, REPowerEU, seeks to achieve 45% renewable energy in the EU at 2030 mix and expedite PV energy adoption through an EU solar energy strategy.
Agrivoltaics is an emerging field that combines agriculture with solar photovoltaics. Third-generation PV technologies, such as flexible semi-transparent Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs), represent one of the most advanced and innovative solutions for simultaneously enhancing crop production and energy generation. By integrating Agrivoltaics directly into greenhouses and open-field cultivation, renewable energy can be generated without sacrificing arable land.
In addition, the use of flexible, semi-transparent, and bifacial OPVs enables multiple land use. These technologies can enhance food production, generate clean energy, reduce temperature, and block harmful UV radiation, while optimizing water use. At the same time, they can transform farms into clean-energy hubs capable of supporting autonomous energy systems in both greenhouse and open-field agricultural environments. Overall, agrivoltaics offers a transformative pathway toward sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, and a new model of productive landscapes on a global scale.
On the other hand, the new generation of agricultural systems integrates Agri-Nano technologies with nanomaterials, nanoparticles, and smart sensors for soil and plant monitoring, real-time monitoring of nutrients, humidity, and stress indicators, and biosensors for crop health and food quality assessment. It enables new approaches for plant protection, crop monitoring, food safety, and enhanced plant growth. It introduces OLEDs and lighting solutions to enhance crop yield, hybrid renewable energy systems, and AI-driven decision tools. These technologies enable precision monitoring of soil, crops, and microclimates, support smart irrigation and water management, and transform farms into intelligent, energy-producing and resilient food ecosystems, while improving crop productivity, resource efficiency, and food quality across the agricultural value chain.
The 5th International Conference on Agri-Nano & Agrivoltaics brings together leading researchers, technology developers, industry representatives, and policymakers focused on the intersection of Agriculture, nanotechnology, renewable energy, sensing and lighting technologies, and Artificial Intelligence. Participants will gain insights into the latest scientific advances, emerging technologies, and real-world applications, while benefiting from networking opportunities, new collaborations, and knowledge exchange that can accelerate innovation and deployment in sustainable agriculture and Agrivoltaic systems.
